A dark cloud hovers over Lady Lily Montgomery. Her future is no longer her own. She is betrothed to a man she cannot recall meeting, and worse; many close to her have perished under mysterious circumstances. For her protection, her guardian sends her away from London to stay with his friend, Lord Duncan Cavanaugh, the Earl of Westbrook. Duncan is not convinced Lady Lily is a virtuous victim and steels himself to unearth what lies beneath her beauty and boldness. Does she orchestrate the tragic deaths of those close to her or is someone covering his or her tracks too well? He vows to solve this deadly mystery and to ignore her charming spell. As he begins to uncoverthe truth, Duncanmust decide if Lily is an angel of misfortune or the devil in disguise.
An arm was raised near him and he reached for the arm as he spun and pushed the intruder into the wall. He heard a gasp as he shoved the intruder into the wall and pressed his body forward holding the arm above him. His body shifted against surprisingly feminine curves. Shifting, he looked down to see Lily’s eyes widen in fear as he held her arm above her head and the dagger at her throat.
He stepped away immediately. “Lily! What the hell are you doing?”
She looked down and replied, “I heard a noise.”
“You should have woken me and not come down here by yourself,” he whispered harshly.
Even in the dim moonlight he could feel her penetrating stare. She shifted the candlestick she carried and placed it under her arm as she rubbed the wrist that he had just held.
“I wanted to be certain someone was there before I alerted anyone. A strange noise should not instantly cause alarm,” she scoffed.
“Did I hurt you?” Duncan asked as he watched her continue to rub her wrist.
She shook her head and looked away from him again, as if embarrassed. Duncan’s eyes adjusted to the dim light and he looked over her to make sure she was uninjured. He gaped. She wore a white nightgown, but her entire form was visible through the nearly transparent material. The perfection of her form did not surprise him, but seeing her nipples harden and the dark triangle between her legs was about to undo him. She was an angel who could tempt the devil himself.
He gently placed his hand on her shoulder and said, “Stay here.”
His voice sounded much harsher than he intended, but he watched Lily shake her head.
“No. I will be safer with you.”
Duncan opened his mouth to protest, but his stomach tightened at the confidence of her words.
“Fine. Stay behind me and try to be quiet.”
He moved forward and then reached behind him as he felt her delicate hand move into his. Staying close to the wall, they moved together towards the kitchen. They went behind a wall near the library and he saw someone moving towards them. He put his finger to his lips to signal Lily to be silent as he crotched down and then leapt on the person, slamming them down on the ground.
The man cried out, “Villain!”
Then the man swung and struck Duncan on the side of the face.
His cheek stung as he recognized his butler’s voice. “Simon, you fool, it’s me!”
“Oh, my lord! Beg your pardon, sir!”
Duncan moved off Simon and they stood up together. “What the hell are you doing?”
Simon replied, “I heard a noise and came to investigate.”
“So did I. What did you find?”
“Nothing, but the back door was open and I am certain it was closed before. I was going to search the grounds when I heard another noise in the hallway, which I assume now, was you.”
Duncan nodded as he saw Simon gape as he turned towards Lily. “My lady!”
If Duncan had a coat he would have taken it off and thrown it over her. Simon looked at Duncan obviously at a loss for further words and then removed his robe. Handing the robe to Lily, he said, “Please, for you.”
Taking the robe from his butler, she blushed and said, “Thank you.”
Duncan said, “Simon, check the grounds. I will take Lady Montgomery back up to her room and I will check on Eleanor.”
Simon nodded and walked away from them. Duncan turned and looked at Lily. “We should go.”
She shook her head. “Wait.”
“Must you always challenge me,” he asked harshly.
“I just think you need some ice for your cheek.”
She gently touched his face where Simon had struck him and then pulled her hand back swiftly as if she touched fire. Glancing over him, she appeared uneasy before she stepped back.
He took a deep breath and said, “I will take care of it later, but I appreciate your concern.”
Duncan took her elbow to lead her upstairs. As much as he would enjoy her administrations, he needed to get her as far away from him as possible. He opened her door and did a quick check of her bedroom. Satisfied no one was in the room, he stopped in the doorway as he felt her hand gently touch his arm. She whispered, “Thank you.”
Turning to face her, he sighed before he said, “If you hear a noise in the future, please wake me or one of the staff.” He stepped back slightly into the hallway. “Also, Lily, please remember to wear a robe if you venture out in the middle of the night.”
She narrowed her eyes as she placed one fist on her hip. “Certainly, as long as you remember to wear a shirt!”
She glared at him just before she slammed the door in his face.

Abandoned by her birth parents and ignored by her adoptive family, Maddy Page believes she is unlovable. She only allows herself to dream of falling in love. That changes when she meets MJ; handsome and kind, MJ penetrates Maddy’s defenses. Maddy soon finds herself confiding in MJ like she has with no one else, revealing secrets even her closest friends don’t know. He makes her feel safe–a feeling she’s never experienced except in her dreams.
When Maddy witnesses MJ disappear and reappear in thin air, she realizes she might have been wrong about him. He could be dangerous–maybe even a killer. Determined to uncover the truth of who–or what–MJ is, Maddy ignores her instinct to run. But she soon realizes that getting close to MJ could cost more than a broken heart–it could cost Maddy her soul.
My entire body pulses in the wake of his touch. His words “if you were mine” keep circling around in my head, and with each rotation, something inside me grows. He makes me feel happy and less broken. I feel I could take on the world as long as he’s beside me. Whatever he is, I don’t care. I’ve never felt anything like this, and I’ll go to Hell and back to keep it. Regardless of what happens to me, I have to protect him. I have to keep him safe, always.
He grins and squeezes my hand again. My body responds with such intensity, I almost feel as if I were floating. I don’t want it to ever stop. I want to stay strong. I want to be brave. I want to feel safe. He gives me all of that. I want to hold him forever, even if it’s only his hand.
“Tomorrow,” he says, pulling me from my thoughts. “I’ll find a way to see you.”
All I want now is to be near her—but that could be the very thing that kills her.
“If you care for her, you’ll leave this house and never see her again. If she dies and she’s unknown to Heaven, that’s it. This otherworldly girl will either be sentenced to Hell or
cease to exist. Can you face eternity knowing you brought that fate to her?”
All the air rushes out of my body as the weight of her life once again rests on my soul. I turn back to her, memorizing as much as I can about her—the way her soft arms wrap
around her torso, the color of her eyes that match the emerald gemstone still in my pocket, and soft pink lips I never got to touch.
Goodbye, my Maddy. I stand and find the strength to walk out the door and leave the best thing that has ever happened to me.
My heart flutters. I really do like MJ. I blush and pop a few grapes into my mouth. As ecstatic as that makes me feel, I still don’t know, fully, if I can trust him—not until I know what he is. “So … you still haven’t answered my original question. Government experiment, superhero, or something else. Which is it?”
He sighs, shaking his head. “I wasn’t created in a lab somewhere.”
“What about an alien?”
“Wouldn’t that fall under the category of magician?”
“Magicians are usually fake. Warlocks and witches could be real. So are you one?”
Stumped, I rest my chin on my hand and huff in exasperation.
“Give up?” he asks.
“No. But I’ve made some good progress on my list.”
“You have a list?”
“Uh huh.” I toss a few more grapes into my mouth.
“Of what you think I might be?”
“I don’t suppose you could just let it go?”
I narrow my eyes at him. “If I did a bunch of crazy things that you couldn’t explain, would you let it go?”
He smirks and shakes his head. “You win.

Mike Markel writes the Detectives Seagate and Miner Mystery series, which is set in the fictional small city of Rawlings, Montana, home of Central Montana State University. That university is somewhat like Boise State University, where Mike is a professor, but in Rawlings the weather is colder, the football team less successful, and the murder rate much, much higher.

Joe B. Parr
Joe B. Parr is a North Texas based Mystery Suspense writer. As a native of the Fort Worth, TX area, his novels are crime dramas based in and around DFW. Residents of the area will enjoy the familiar sights and sounds. For others, he provides a virtual tour highlighting the area’s feel and diversity.
His current releases, The Victim and Stolen Innocence, are available in both paperback and ebook (Kindle) on Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com and selected independent book stores.
He writes entertaining fiction with an undercurrent of social commentary. His books address provocative issues by introducing characters who provide multiple perspectives so that the reader is driven to explore their own thoughts.
In The Victim, those issues include gangs, media stereotypes and the racial tensions within the community. In Stolen Innocence, he highlights the growing issue of Human Trafficking and its disproportional impact on immigrant and minority communities.
What are you reading now or what do you have in your TBR pile?
I’m reading Lionel Asbo by Martin Amis, the British novelist. Even though he produces the most incendiary prose now written in English, I don’t always love his books. His satire is so astringent that sometimes it’s difficult for me to like any of his characters. But Lionel Asbo, about a young British lout who wins the lottery, and his bookish nephew, is, I think, a real breakthrough. It’s being described as a modern Great Expectations, and so far I agree. I’m loving it.
Do you write an outline before every book you write?
Yes, I do. Because I write mysteries in which three or more people could have done the initial murder, my plots are quite intricate. I always have follow-up crimes, too, that occur when my detectives begin to tighten the noose. Therefore, I have to orchestrate the action down to the day and hour. Sometimes I have to revise the outline when I think of something better, but I can’t just let the story take me where it will or I’ll end up in a ditch.
While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters?
Yes and no. My protagonist, the extremely flawed Detective Karen Seagate, derives a lot of her dysfunctional personality from me. And the poor woman talks a lot like me. But I made her a female because I wanted to be sure she couldn’t become me. She’s got enough problems of her own.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
This might sound stupid, but I would start with this question: Why do you want to write? If the answer is to become famous or rich, that probably won’t happen. If it is to share your story, that’s somewhat less unlikely, but still not all that likely. In fact, if you can be happy without writing, that would probably be best. Figure out another way to make money or become famous or fill your time.
Being a writer is, in some important ways, unwise. You sit in a chair all day, cutting off the circulation to your legs, making sentences and paragraphs that clearly are not very good–at least until many drafts later, and even then there’s no guarantee. Then–this is the worst thing about it–you ask people to give you something really valuable. I don’t mean a few bucks; I mean a few hours.
When I read a writer announcing a new book with words like “Exciting news: my new novel is now available,” I wonder if he or she realizes that while it might in fact be very exciting for the writer, in what universe is it likely to be exciting for the reader? With many hundreds of thousands of new books appearing, and most of them not very good or at least not to the reader’s taste, the writer is pushing a boulder up a very steep hill.
Let me be clear: I’m not talking about all those other writers out there, but not myself. I’m talking about me, too. Why should anyone care if I’m publishing a new novel? I think it’s good, just like every other author does about his or her new book. But do I think everyone ought to think it’s good, too, or that it’s worth a few bucks and a few hours? I’ve written too much to be that naive.
So, long story short (“Too late,” Dorothy Parker famously said), if you write and ask people to read it, you’re setting yourself up for a world of hurt.
But I’ll end with one other small comment. I love to write. It makes me happy. And when I get positive comments from readers, which I do surprisingly often, I’m very glad that they, for one reason or another, gave me a few hours and thought my book was not horrible.

Genre: Science Fiction Romance
Bree never thought her dimwit act, military grade mace, cattle prod, or dumping a ton of stinky manure on Jaylan’s head would encourage his pursuit. Who knew a Coletti warlord would think of being zapped with a cattle prod as foreplay? Or a determined opponent only heightened his enjoyment of the chase?
The chase comes to an abrupt halt when the Tai-Kok attack Tucson, forcing Bree to team up with the Coletti warlord to stop them. Suddenly plucked from Earth by a crazed Tai-Kok commander, Jaylan and Bree find themselves stranded on a hostile alien world, and being tracked by a deadly Askole assassin. It’s really no time for the two of them to fall in love.
A thick cloud of dust obscured the landscape. A shadow moved in the dust.
The shadow became a form.
The form became a man. Holy Mother of God! I hit the emergency beacon on my belt and bolted. I hoped Pops was monitoring the frequency.
Jaylan’s powerful body slammed into me, knocking me down. He locked his arms around me in an unbreakable hold. “You will not escape me again.”
I squirmed against his crushing grip. “Wanna bet?”
Jaylan’s teeth scraped lightly across my neck.
Sheer blind panic overwhelmed me. If he took my blood, he could find me anywhere, anytime he wished. “No! Let go of me, you stinky, manure-covered bastard.”
“It ends now,” Jaylan purred in my head, and sank his teeth deep into my neck.
My body tightened as a pleasure-pain roared through me. The pleasure increased with every draw until my panties were wet and my pussy throbbed. “Stop! Damn you. Stop!” I beat frantically at his mind.
Jaylan suddenly stiffened. “Your blood is most unusual.”
Oh crap. Was my secret about to be exposed? “Really? How strange.” Through our link, I felt him swish my blood around his mouth as if he was savoring its very essence.
“Who is your father?”
Withdrawing his fangs, Jaylan licked the wounds on my neck and growled. “No. Your father is Coletti. You will tell me his name.”
“He’s dead. What difference does it make?”
His fingers clamped painfully around my jaw. “His name.”
One look at the menace glittering in Jaylan’s eyes, and I almost peed my pants. “My mother called him Thor.”
Jaylan jumped to his feet, dragging me with him. “How did he die?”
“He was trampled.”
“Horses. Mom got him hired as a stuntman in her Viking flick. He was a piss-poor rider. He fell off his horse and was trampled.”
“That is not possible. He was Coletti,” Jaylan corrected sharply.
“So you knew him?”
There was a fleeting second of inky blackness, and we were standing in the war room of a Coletti battle cruiser. Yippee-ki-yay. Escaping just got a tad bit harder.
Six muscle-bound warriors snapped to attention. When the overpowering stench of horse manure hit them, they all took an instinctive step backward.
A horde of flies buzzed merrily around Jaylan’s shit-covered head.
Who knew flies could be teleported? I waved a hand in front of my face. “Wow, someone really stinks, don’t they?” I batted at the nasty critters. “Y’all have a fly swatter?”
The warriors stared at me in disbelief.
With a big smile, I gushed, “I’m Bree, and I think you know stinky guy here. The poor thing is a bit accident-prone. Right, honey bunny?”
His big hand wrapped around the back of my neck, and Jaylan bellowed in my head, “Not another word or I’ll throw you on the table and complete the mating bond now.”
“You’d do me in front of them?” I wrinkled my nose in disgust. “All covered in manure?”
